Towing Industry Port Captain
GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION:
Directly supervise marine employees. Develop marine operations and cost control programs for vessels.
Hire, train and evaluate marine personnel. Produce monthly operating reports.
Assist in vessel scheduling of personnel as required. Assist in new project
development interfacing with customers, etc.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Supervise Captains, Mates and Deck Crews
Recruitment, training and evaluating
marine personnel
Develop and administer operating cost control procedures on company vessels
Assist in new project development
Perform incident investigations,
manage company safety program
Schedule routine company activities as
required (including Captain and crew meetings
Operate company vessels as Captain if
directed by President or Vice President

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Type 40 words per minute
Computer Skills: Word and Excel
Captains license on offshore towboats
is preferred
Extensive knowledge of tugboat oil transportation industry
Knowledge
of tug and barge maintenance systems and equipment
Ability to
deal with others using courtesy, tact, and good judgment
Maintain
the confidentiality of all sensitive communications
Ability to
understand and execute complex oral and written instructions
Ability to
work independently with minimal or no guidance
Ability to
get along with office staff and vessel crew members
Must be
physically fit enough to board barges and tugs at sea and in port
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Must be
able to read, speak, write, type and understand English in person and over the
phone
Must
be thoroughly familiar with tank barge, ship and terminal/refinery operations
SPECIALIZED SKILLS REQUIRED:
Captains license on offshore towboats
Valid Drivers license
Ability to get along with office staff
and vessel crew members
Must be physically fit enough to board
barges and tugs at sea and in port
JOB CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT:
Normal
office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Take
communications 24 hours a day, including weekends, concerning changes in
schedules and conditions
Capable of
making decisions and giving directions to facilitate prompt service delivery
Frequently
required to board tugs, barges, and ships, at dock or at anchor in all weather
conditions and at all hours>
WORK EXPERIENCE:
Five years at sea on tugboats, tankers or
oil barges or equivalent military experience
Five years of increasingly responsible
management experience in the maritime industry
EDUCATION/TRAINING:
Four year
college education in Maritime or related studies or equivalent experience.
Perform inspections of vessels on repair & maintenance standards and
procedures
United States Coast Guard license
Bridge Management Resource Training
HAZWOPER
(including Incident Command System) training within 90 days of being hired
First Aid
training
CPR
training
OTHER DUTIES:
Performs related duties as assigned.
