GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION:
Acts as second
in command of the tug and barge. Must be able to understand and carry out the
orders and directions of the captain. Must be prepared to assume command in the
event of incapacity of the captain. Responsible for safely making and breaking
tow with barges, handling lines and wires. Responsible for maintenance and
cleanliness of the vessel.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
500 Ton Ocean or Near Coastal US Coast Guard License
All Applicable STCW Endorsements
Preferred 1600 Ton Ocean or Near Coastal US Coast Guard License
License Endorsed for Towing Operations or TOAR
STCW 95 Certificate
US Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document
Relevant Towing Experience
FCC Certificate
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
The
job responsibilities include, but are not limited, to the following:
Stands wheelhouse watch alternating with captain.
Oversees safety of vessel including all installed equipment and inspections
thereof.
Maintains chart corrections and light lists for Area of Operations.
Instructs deckhands in seamanship skills.
Assists captain in barge landings and must be able to communicate distances and
directions to captain accurately and concisely.
Determine the need for and assign lookouts as necessary.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Type 40 words per minute
Computer Skills: Word and Excel
United States Coast Guard license on offshore towboats
is preferred
Maintain
the confidentiality of all sensitive communications
Ability to
understand and execute complex oral and written instructions
Ability to
get along with office staff and vessel crew members
Must be able to communicate
in English and effectively direct workers in assigning jobs and seeing them
through to completion.
Must be able to train assigned workers.
Must be able to fairly evaluate subordinates.
Must be
physically fit enough to board barges and tugs at sea and in port
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Must be
able to read, speak, write, type and understand English in person and over the
phone
SPECIALIZED SKILLS REQUIRED:
Captains license on offshore towboats
Valid Drivers license
Ability to get along with office staff
and vessel crew members
Must be physically fit enough to board
barges and tugs at sea and in port
Ability to live in confined
spaces and get along with crew members for extended periods of time.
Must be able to instruct deckhand on use of all tools and machinery onboard
vessel.
JOB CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT:
Exposure
to all weather conditions (rain, ice, snow, heat, wind, heavy seas, etc.)
Ability to adapt to a variety of schedules and hours
Able to work weekends, holidays, and at night. Willing to take call outs.
Must not be afraid of heights.
Valid state driver’s license.
WORK EXPERIENCE:
Previous experience as mate or master aboard a towing vessel
EDUCATION/TRAINING:
Must
have a valid Coast Guard license with radar observer endorsement.
Must have Coast Guard approved fire fighting training.
Must have a valid first aid certificate.
Must have CPR training.
Complete HAZWOPER training within 90 days of hire.
Bridge Management Resource Training
OTHER DUTIES:
Inspecting
for cleanliness of vessel.
Inventory supplies and order as appropriate.
Monitor onboard usage to ensure supplies are utilized in an efficient manner.
